Dawsonville is known for many things, moonshine, auto racing and Amicalola Falls being the three highlights.

Dawson County was known to be a significant source of illegal moonshine for Atlanta during and after the prohibition era. Many would modify their cars for better speed and handling to evade police when delivering their cargo. It soon became a competition to see who was able to build the fastest vehicle and from there NASCAR was born. Each year Dawsonville has a festival called the Mountain Moonshine Festival to bring the history alive!

Auto Racing is well known in Dawsonville and began as a consequence of the moonshine activity in the area. Dawsonville is home to the retired NASCAR driver Bill Elliott, who won the Winston Cup championship in 1988 and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015, as well as his son Chase Elliott who currently races in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series. The Dawsonville siren goes off to let residence know that a racing accomplishment has occurred by Bill or Chase! Check out the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame to find out more fun facts!
